Interview: ADAMS

We were given the opportunity to interview the duo ADAMS, in light of their 2014 Europe tour. A big thank you to Ramên Events and the members of ADAMS! We hope you enjoy the interview, and will join them (and us!) on their tour~

Could you describe each other with one word?
Shota: Adam is God. I mean something sacred, holy.
ADAM: Shota is... smart.

If you had to describe yourself with a color, what would it be and why?
Usually I say purple but... Finally I'd say white. Because ADAMS always tries new challenges, new experiences. It's like a white paper each time. If you see a white sheet of paper, or a white board, you will need to draw something on, put all your madness and originality on it. It's what I think about ADAMS.

How did you meet and when did you form the band?
Few years ago we were playing as vocalist and guitarist in the same band, but unfortunately, the project split up quite soon. It was back in 2011, and I (Shota) was creating my company, HIGHFeeL Japan, as a music producer. ADAM asked me to produce him as a solo vocalist. We worked hard on his project, and finally I decided to become part of it, as I am a guitarist. So I play both roles of musician and producer.

Your performance and music have a very distinguished theme, homo-eroticism, why did you choose this?
It came quite naturally. Of course we are musicians, but we wanted to add something very artistic in our band. That's why we choose to work with the best photographer/cameraman, Ryôta Sakai. He created an amazing esthetic around our band.

How did you think the fans would interpret this?
To be honest? We don't know. Usually, we create a video first, according to our own artistic sense, and publish it. Then we see the reaction, and it's very interesting. People say : “Oh, ADAMS means this or this”, and in fact we learn more about ourselves. Fans make us understand what and who we are.

Who or what are your big influences?
ADAM: musically speaking, great Japanese vocalists like Hyde or GACKT.
Shota: some old school visual kei bands, but mostly Kuroyume.

What has been your biggest challenge so far?
Hmm... The biggest challenge was the first single, DIZZY LOVE. A first single is very important, you must put the best in it. All the good bands started by an amazing first single, so we gave everything to make DIZZY LOVE as good as we wanted. And we obtained a very good reaction from the audience, so we are very happy about that.

What is your most memorable performance so far?
You mean live performance? All of them are memorable, but the one in the Netherlands last summer is very special. It was a festival, and we had no fanbase over there. Nobody knew about ADAMS. But as soon as we started the show, people get very excited, and finally they enjoyed a lot. So we were very glad.

What would you say is your biggest achievement so far?
Hmm it's hard to say. We still have a long way to go. But maybe it's the fact we could already play in Europe?

Can you tell us more about your single 「Seseragi」?
Seseragi is very related to our “boys love” side. It's very different than Bittersweet, which was more VK... Seseragi is a song to remember, talking about the feelings from the past. We'll release our PV soon, you'll see, we are wearing student costumes, and this is an illustration of our past feelings.

A final message to your fans and our readers?
Shota: Thanks a lot for your support, anywhere in Europe. We hope to see you soon! Love.
ADAM: Love you, always. Please come during the next tour.

ADAMS will perform at the Made in Asia convention in Brussels, where at least one of us will also be present, so we hope to see you there and then!
