Band of the Week: SuG

SuG call their music "Heavy Positive Rock", and since their first appearance in 2006 they were a huge hit all over Japan and the J-Rock scene all over the world. The name is derived from the Japanese way to pronounce the word "thug", "sagu", but "SuG" looked better.

Together with guitarists Yuji and Masato, Vocalist Takeru had originally performed with a band called "Travel", and decided to begin "SuG" after Travel disbanded.
He seems to be a fan-favourite, with his vibrant personality, obsession with butterflies and general creative strangeness without going gothic or over the top. He also has his own clothing line in Harajuku, called "Million$Orchestra", which, as you would expect, exhibits Takeru's strangeness-with-a-touch-of-cute.

SuG have released 6 full albums, 1 DVD and 17 singles over the last 6 years, making them an established presence on the Japanese music scene. They're currently signed with PS Company, one of the biggest record labels in Japan, after having been part of their Indie label.

Their most recent single, SweeToxic, would also be their last with PSC, as they have recently announced they'll be going on hiatus as of January 2013. Takeru's official statement includes a promise that they'll be back, so it looks like they just need a break from PSC and the business as a whole.
