This week I
will introduce you to coldrain, a post-hardcore band from Nagoya.
Coldrain is influenced by western rock and metal styles. Vocalist
Masato mixes hard edged screaming with melodic singing, which blends
in perfectly with the guitar work and metalcore influenced drumming.
The lyrics of this band are all in English. It seems like a lot of
Japanese hardcore bands prefer English lyrics, but frontman Masato is
half-American and so his native language is English. Similar bands
are Crossfaith and SiM (Silence iz Mine).
Coldrain was
formed in Nagoya in 2007 and consists of vocalist Masato, bassist
RxYxO (Ryo), drummer Katsuma and guitarists Sugi and Y.K.C (Yokochi).
In the beginning the band only performed in their hometown and
distributed their homemade demo discs after each performance. The
group won over the audience with their impressive lives and English
lyrics.
Almost a
year after their formation, the band signed a major contract with
record label “VAP”. VAP is mostly known for working with
“Nightmare” and “Maximum the Hormone”. “Fiction”,
coldrain's debut maxi-single, was released on November 5, 2008. Many
publications used the term “shocking debut!” for this single.
After the release they set off for their first nationwide tour and
managed to sell out most of the dates in 30 cities.
After a
series of concerts and appearances in some well-known rock magazines,
second maxi-single “8AM” was released on April 8, 2009. The
limited edition of this single contained the PV of the title song and
3 live videos of “Fiction”, “Painting” and “Come Awake”.
“8AM” was also used as the theme song for the anime series
“Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger”. With the release of the second
maxi-single an other nationwide tour followed. This time they played
42 shows. Thanks to all those lives their fanbase grew steadily. When
summer came around, the guys made an appearance at the “Summer
Sonic” festival. On October 28 debut album “Final Destination”
was released and yet an other successful national tour followed. This
time all the concert tickets were sold.
On June 23,
2010, mini-album “Nothing lasts forever” hit the shelves. One of
the songs, “We're not alone”, was used as the opening theme for
anime series “RAINBOW nisharokubo no shichinin”. Another song,
“Die Tomorrow”, was used for the “Pro Evolution Soccer 2011”
soundtrack. 2010 ended with an unexpected announcement. Coldrain
would participate in recordings for a “Kuroyume” tribute album.
“V.A.
:Fuck The Borderline -A Tribute to KUROYUME” came out on February
9, 2011. A week later, coldrain released their second album “The
Enemy Inside”. The period after the album release was hectic. Not
only did the band have their national tour to promote their latest
album, they also performed at one of the biggest music festivals in
Japan, “Rock in Japan Festival 2011”. Near the end of the year
the band's first live DVD, “Three Days of Adrenaline” was
released.
The year
2012 was full of live performances, and mini-album “Through
Clarity” came out. The song “No Escape” was used as a theme
song for the popular game “BIOHAZARD: Operation Raccoon City”. In
August there was an announcement that coldrain's activities would
paused for a short while due to drummer Katsuma's health problems.
Autumn was again fully booked with live shows, both in Japan and
overseas. It was in December that Masato announced in his blog that
coldrain had started preparations for the new album, “The
Revelation”, which will go on sale on April 17, 2013.
